English Tutoring
English is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Between its complicated phonics rules and its strange grammar rules that both have a thousand exceptions, it’s no wonder so many kids struggle with reading and writing. Oftentimes, students do not develop strong phonics skills in kindergarten and first grade. This can get overlooked by teachers who only have time to hone in on the struggling reader or writer. The child falls behind in their reading and writing, developing a dislike for those activities because of their struggle and often believing the lie they are just “too stupid” to understand.
Cornerstone Knowledge measures where the students’ skills are at and builds from there. We rebuild phonics skills, imbue confidence into the student, and use their own interests to reignite a love of reading and writing. We also know that English skills are important beyond school. We want our students to not only complete grade-level milestones but have the skills they need to succeed even after they graduate. In English tutoring, we use games, hands-on manipulatives, phonics practice, combo-reading, and writing challenges.
What is English Tutoring?
Reading
Reading is an important skill for children and adults. Excellent reading skills involve the ability to correctly pronounce words, read at a good pace, and comprehend the material. We work with kids to improve these skills from teaching them to identify words in context to igniting a love for reading and stories. Reading is closely entwined with writing and phonics. We often combine these for maximum benefit.
Writing
Writing is necessary to succeed in our world. Many people have poor writing skills even as adults, making it difficult to advance in their careers. When we tutor in writing, we focus on building a strong base. We begin with an understanding of parts of speech. Building from that, we work on sentence structure, paragraph structure, and finally essay structure. We also use reading and phonics to help with writing and spelling.
Phonics
Phonics and phonemic awareness are the roots of why many people struggle with reading and spelling. At Cornerstone Knowledge, we focus on building a strong base in phonemic awareness so that students have a strong foundation to build their reading and spelling skills. In phonics tutoring, we use hands-on manipulatives, games, worksheets, and more.

1-2 Sessions Per Week
$50
This is our standard session price for one hour. Our custom times are pro-rated. For example, a 30-minute session is only $25. Scroll down to see what’s included in this price.
3+ Sessions Per Week
$45
If you schedule three or more sessions a week, we reduce the price per session to $45 per hour. This includes our custom time which is pro-rated based on the discounted price.
Virtual Sessions
$40
Our virtual tutoring session is at a discounted rate, but the value is the same as our in-person tutoring. We only offer hour sessions with virtual tutoring. This is a great money-saving option.

What happens at the first session? Our first session is a trial to make sure we are a good fit for your student. In this session, we spend some time building rapport with your child and assessing their current skillset. Once you decide to continue tutoring, we use that information to develop a personalized tutoring plan that uses the child’s interests to repair their foundational knowledge.
